Hayes Valley
In recent years, Hayes Valley has gotten a ton of press for being home to some of the city's fine arts performances and art galleries. Located just off Van Ness, near Opera Plaza, restaurants like Absinthe, Indigo and the like make a convenient pre or post-symphony stop. For the less well-endowed, Flipper's serves up a mean burger and Powell's is one of the best soul food joints in town while quiet bars and cafes offer comfy couches and low-key entertainment.

Hayes Valley also has a well-respected community of independently owned shops, boutiques, and shoe stores. While the emphasis here is still on the big events and dining, those who live here have found a host of other pleasures, including regular evening block parties, live music and friendly neighbors.
