Best Outdoor Patio Bars and Restaurants in San Francisco

No matter the season, San Francisco is sure to have some seriously warm and sunny days. On those rare days when the heat is on, there are few better places to enjoy the weather than at one of the few patio bars and restaurants scattered throughout the city. Here are a few of our favorites.

El Techo de Lolinda
2518 MISSION ST AT 21ST ST
El Techo de Lolinda is tops when it comes to rooftop patio dining or drinks in SF. This casual restaurant and bar is the sister to street level Argentinean restaurant Lolinda and offers similar Latin American flair with food and drink offerings inspired by the region’s street food. The roof terrace benefits from the Mission District’s tendency to be slightly warmer than the rest of San Francisco and stellar views of the surrounding neighborhood and downtown skyline. Their margaritas are rumored to be some of the best in town. The Chicharrones are a favorite and its hard to go wrong with any of the specialty cocktail on the menu.

Café Floré
2298 MARKET ST AT NOE
Cafe Flore, a neighborhood staple for 40 years, thrives on its location in one of the most vibrant and sun-filled corridors of San Francisco. This Castro locale is the perfect place to enjoy brunch with mimosas or even just an afternoon coffee or drink while watching the bustle of upper Market pass by. Look out for weekday drink specials and don’t be afraid to bring your pup.

Zeitgeist
199 VALENCIA ST AT DUBOCE
No list of outdoor eating spots would be complete without Zeitgeist. While this hangout is perhaps most famous for its 40 beer taps and punky hipster vibe, it is perhaps the most visited patio spot in the larger downtown area. In addition to the libations you’ll fine a grill in the back of the bar, complete with deliciously greasy burgers, grilled cheeses, kielbasa sausages and (vegan friendly) home fries. Be sure to bring cash before order at the bar. Pitchers with friends or the bloody Mary (one of the best in town) is the way to go here.

The Tipsy Pig
2231 CHESTNUT ST AT PIERCE
The Tipsy Pig is a great spot to stop in on a Marina stroll session. Not only does the gastrotavern feature a beautifully lush back patio but it is also an award-winning restaurant. The mac and cheese is one of the most popular menu items paired with a custom cocktail menu. Look out for the special the patio menu.

Jones
620 JONES ST AT GEARY
Its easy to pass this stylish bar when wandering through the Tenderloin. But once you have arrived, its upscale chic interior and large rooftop terrace views will make the gritty street below a distant memory. The menu includes both classic and custom cocktails as well as nu-Italian inspired culinary creations. It’s a popular weekend brunch spot, but also a great stop for happy hour or a late-night drink.

Biergarten
424 OCTAVIA ST AT FELL
When it comes to eating and drinking outdoors, the Germans most certainly know how to do it. Although we lack an official Oktoberfest here in the states, the feel of the German festival can be felt year-round at this Hayes Valley outdoor bar. Created by the owners of nearby Suppenkuche, Biergarten creates a German experience with heavy, liter beer steins and a menu with typical German eats like bratwurst and picked radishes. Blankets are provided for cold days.

El Rio
3158 MISSION ST AT CESAR CHAVEZ ST
No list of outdoor venues in San Francisco would be complete with this Outer Mission outdoors hideaway. Frequented by punks and hipsters and just about every other walk of life in SF, the bar is also a venue for rock shows and occasionally offers tamalés and other bar grub on the large back patio. Look out for large weekend parties like the always-popular LGBT-friendly Mango bash.

SOMA StrEat Food Park
428 11TH ST AT BRYANT
Home to a rotating cast of some of the Bay Area’s food trucks, SoMA StrEat Food Park, is great stop for daytime noshing in the sunshine. Aside from drinking and dining, the StrEat Park also hosts special events events for big sports games, DJ parties and karaoke.

Zazie
941 COLE ST AT CARL
Known as one of the city’s premiere brunch spots where the wait is de rigueur yet entirely worth it, Zazie also has a lovely back patio, perfect for sipping mimosas or coffee on your weekend late breakfast. Zazie is featured on many “best brunch” lists with a French-inspired menu feturing to-die-for challah French toast and Francophile egg dishes like the Scrambled Eggs Fountainbleu. Very Riviera.

The Ramp
855 TERRY FRANCOIS BOULEVARD AT MARIPOSA ST
Hidden in an industrial and under appreciated area just south of AT&T Park in Mission Bay, the Ramp provides a quiet and sunny bayside retreat. A San Francisco institution since 1950, the Ramp is perfect for brunch, lunch or drinks with a menu featuring California-style favorites and an excellent smattering of seafood options. It’s a perfect excuse to go off the beaten path.

Beach Chalet Brewery & Restaurant
1000 GREAT HWY AT FULTON ST
While many SF foodies lose their culinary knowledge past 9th Avenue, Beach Chalet is the perfect spot for a trip way out West. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and Golden Gate Park, the restaurant offers brewery-style dining in a historic seaside building. Although ocean views are only available from the upstairs, indoor dining room, the restaurant also offers a back patio and lawn seating situated squarely in the far end of the park itself. There is often live music on weekends and lots of parents sneaking a daytime cocktail while their kids roll in the grass.

Arlequin Cafe
384 HAYES ST AT GOUGH ST
The garden patio at Arlequin Café feels like a small oasis in this busy part of town. Located behind the lowkey dining spot and neighboring wine merchant, the deck is the perfect place to enjoy a variety of sandwiches, pastries or coffee beverages at a moderate price in Hayes Valley. Choose from the hand-culled wine list to really make it a day and watch the birds feed on the flora and fauna of the elaborate surroundings.
