Colin Kaepernick Wins $10k for Charity in Style Wars

49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s style sensibilities, pink headphones and all, helped him earn a $10,000 check for charity after winning GQ’s Style Wars competition, according to an announcement today.

In recent years, sports and style go decidedly hand in hand. Blame Tom Brady’s marriage to Gisele Bundchen, or point your finger at tennis slickers such as Andy Murray, but “stylish athlete” is no longer an oxymoron.

While tennis, basketball and international soccer get most of the glory, football clearly wants in on the fun. Enter Style Wars, a recent competition held by GQ Magazine, in which NFL stars were pitted against one another while fans were encouraged to vote on the most stylish athlete.

In turns out that fans were especially partial to the style of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who will donate his winnings to Camp Taylor, a charity helping families of children with heart disease. The tattoo-loving, turtleneck-wearing Kaepernick left behind stylish players such as Victor Cruz (New York Giants), Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers), Eric Decker (New York Jets) and Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals).

The win wasn’t exactly a surprise – Kaepernick is no stranger to GQ praise, starring on the magazine’s cover in 2013.

His love of fashion is also widely documented in various articles and photographs, featuring his skinny jeans, on-trend sneakers, edgy leather jackets and high-end cardigans.

Surely, the fickle San Francisco weather has something to do with it—a man has to know his layers. Hopefully, some of this stylish winning spirit will lend itself to the game on Sunday.
