Southern Lights by Lee Brady

SEE EVENT DETAILS

November brings a new reason for thanksgiving for Bay Area audiences as 3Girls Theatre Company brings  Lee Brady’s beloved country music romance, SOUTHERN LIGHTS, to  the venerable North Beach Saloon, SPEC's, in brand-new, site specific revivial.   Directed by Andrea Gordon, and starring Lorri Holt and John Flanagan, this musical is a country song—all about true love, betrayal, success and failure and doomed romance(s).
Bay Area actors Lorri Holt and John Flanagan take on dual roles-- first as Callie and Lonn, whose love affair as teens was shattered by tragedy-- and the roles of country music legend, Cash Callendar and his much wronged wife, LouAnne.  Musical director, songwriter and performer Robert Beifus will bring a rousing country band to Spec’s that is guaranteed to have audiences on their feet as well as crying in their beer. (Or Napa Wine.)   Long time costuming legend, Beaver Bauer will design the down-home wear as well as the glittery rhinestone jacket worn by Cash Callendar.
The original grass-roots production at Theater Artists of Marin in 1991 won over audience and critics, winning BEST MUSICAL award that year.  Brought back at the Phoenix Theatre in 2004, its young lovers, both country singers who are plagued by parents who are super stars, proved there is an real need for more country music romance.
Andrea Gordon is a long-time director in the Bay Area and a pioneer in site-specific productions.  In 1992, she staged a highly successful production of Saroyan’s “The Time of Your Life,” at Spec’s i—on Saroyan Alley.  Gordon also worked in traditional theaters (Marin Theatre, Magic, Berkeley Rep and others) but loves jolting audiences with old works done in a new way—and in a surprising place.  Award-winning playwright Brady, a co-founder of 3Girls Theatre, is well known to Bay Area and audiences Monterey Peninsula audiences.
