Songs Against War: Ukrainian Folksinging Workshop with Mariana Sadovska

SEE EVENT DETAILS
"Ukraine's Bjork" Mariana Sadovska is a folk song collector, vocalist, actress, composer, and an indefatigable cultural activist for a free Ukraine.

Mariana Sadovska and members of Kitka will join forces for a short performance of songs from Ukraine, followed by a brief presentation about the humanitarian aid work that Sadovska and Leleka Foundation are doing on the ground in Ukraine. The evening's main offering will be a participatory community sing in which Sadovska will teach a selection of soulful traditional Ukrainian songs in lush multi-part harmony.

Born in Lviv, and now residing in Cologne, Germany, Mariana Sadovska's international artistic activities include solo concerts as a vocalist, actress, multi-instrumentalist, and multi-media performance artist as well as work as a composer and music director of dramatic works and leadership of Ukrainian choirs and vocal workshops. She finds essential inspiration in the traditional music of Ukraine and Eastern Europe, which she explores in depth to create innovative sonic landscapes . The past becomes contemporary and the regional universal in her trailblazing and heartfelt performances.

Sadovska has appeared on stages in Ukraine, the USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Great Britain, Estonia, Poland, Armenia, Afghanistan, Greece, Turkey, Israel, and beyond.

Kitka is an Oakland-based women's vocal ensemble that specializes in traditional and contemporary vocal music from Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Over the past two decades, Kitka and Sadovska have collaborated on numerous projects in the US and Ukraine including the vocal-theater projects The Rusalka Cycle: Songs Between the Worlds and Singing Through Darkness.

All profits from this event will benefit Warm Up Ukraine, a project of the Leleka Foundation. Leleka has helped front-line medical professionals save lives in Ukraine since 2014.

This event is supported by Activate Oakland and the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program.

$40 (Free for Ukrainian Refugees and Veterans).
