Being born prematurely is the leading cause of death for children under 5, worldwide. Rates of preterm birth are on the rise in the US, particularly for women of color.
Racial disparities in preterm birth rates are direct manifestation of racial inequity and injustice in our society. Early birth is a health equity issue tied to systems of care and reproductive justice:
In San Francisco, 1 in 7 Black babies are born prematurely, nearly double the rate of white early births. (1)
In California, Black women are 47% more likely to deliver early than any other ethnic group. (2)
More than 50% of preterm babies born in California are from Latino households. (3)
Being born just a few weeks prematurely decreases one’s likelihood of completing high-school and having high-paying employment as an adult. (4)
