PRESIDIO DIALOGUES – Thursday Evenings at 6 pm
Notable authors, artists, and conversation starters explore themes from ancient history to current events through interactive dialogues, stimulating talks, panels, performances, and films.
Former US Army Captain Joshua Mantz, author of the forthcoming book The Beauty of a Darker Soul, will take audiences on a relatable tour of his journey back from harrowing physical and psychological experiences as a captain in the United States Army. As medical director of the PTSD Program at the San Francisco VA Health Care System, Thomas Neylan will describe remarkable recent advances in the understanding of how the human mind and body respond to traumatic stress, and connections between personal experience and human biology in the veteran population.
A 2005 graduate of West Point, Joshua Mantz led a highly successful counterinsurgency campaign in Baghdad until a catastrophic sniper attack upended his Army career path in 2007. As leader of the Behavioral Health scientific collaborative at The Northern California Institute for Research and Education (NCIRE), Thomas Neylan is a nationally prominent researcher in the field of sleep, PTSD, and new treatments for veterans. Both presenters live in the Bay Area.
