The AR artwork is viewable from the San Francisco waterfront, and messages can be sent from anywhere in the world.

On July 4, Gray Area presents FREE by artist Nancy Baker Cahill, a city-scale, participatory augmented reality artwork centered on Alcatraz Island and viewable from along the San Francisco waterfront.

Known for her site-specific AR works that examine power, perception, ecology, and public space, Baker Cahill invites participants around the world to send messages of solidarity to people held in U.S. detention. Each message--a kite, blessing, spell, poem, or personal story--takes flight as a digital paper plane, transforming into a bird and joining a growing flock over the island.

Launching on Independence Day, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, FREE asks who freedom is extended to, and who remains excluded from its promise. At a site once built for isolation and confinement, the work gathers voices across distance, making solidarity visible and insisting that no one is disposable.
