Ives Collective - Bohemian Rhapsodies

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Ives Collective
Bohemian Rhapsodies
Robin Sutherland, piano; Roy Malan, violin; Nancy Ellis, viola; Susan Freier, violin & viola; Stephen Harrison, cello

Josef Suk Piano Quartet in A minor, Op. 1
Antonín Dvo?ák Terzetto in C major for two violins and viola, Op. 74 and Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat major Op. 87

You have to admire the audacity of the young composer Josef Suk. Inspired by his teacher, Dvo?ák, and his mentor’s recently premiered Eb Piano Quartet, Op. 87, the eager pupil published his own Piano Quartet in A minor as his Op.1. Suk wrote the work under Dvo?ák’s guidance, and the work owes much to their relationship, but his 17-year-old voice is very much his own. Programmed with Dvo?ák’s Terzetto and Dvo?ák’s aforementioned piano quartet these three Czech/Bohemian works, written within two years of each other, have those special characteristics that have made Bohemian music from the late 19th century so beloved: soaring melody, the flavor of folk music, and humor. Thrillingly, Robin Sutherland, the long-time pianist of the San Francisco Symphony, will join us along with our dear friends, guest violinist, Roy Malan, and violist, Nancy Ellis, for this concert of Bohemian Rhapsodies. Simply put, Robin is an artist we revere.
