Nov 3, 7:30pm-9:30pm, and Nov 4, 10am-4pm
Humanities West presents Norman Sicily: Art & Power in Palermo, a two-day program of lectures, discussions, and musical performances exploring the multi-ethnic clash of 11th century Sicily, emphasizing the powerful Norman influence on art, music, architecture, and politics.
Designed to transport audiences through time and across the globe, bringing illuminating lectures and dynamic performances to the Bay Area, Humanities West opens its 2017-2018 season with a visit to 11th century Sicily to explore the Norman influence on art and culture in Palermo.
Teofilo Ruiz, one of UCLA's most popular and well-respected history professors, gives the opening lecture to provide an overview of the history of southern Italy as a site of cultural convergence and the resulting accomplishments carried out under the Norman rule. Professor Ruiz's talk demonstrates how the Normans promoted a vigorous cultural program in which great works of art showed the richness of cultural hybridity.
The Friday evening program also includes a musical lecture/performance on Sicilian Life on the Operatic Stage introduced by Clifford Cranna (SF Opera) and features a live performance by Marie Plette (soprano) and Philip Skinner (bass-baritone), with piano accompaniment by Bryndon Hassman.
Saturday presenters/presentations include Fred Astren (SFSU) on pre-Norman Sicily, Sharon Gerstel (UCLA) on Art & Architecture, and Beverly Allen (Syracuse) on Courtly Love Poetry, along with a special lecture/performance of Troubadour Music from the Court of Frederick II by early music specialist Tim Rayborn.
A panel discussion with the presenters will follow, addressing questions from the audience.
