"Feather Clink" by Rachel Dwan: Opening Reception

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present "Feather Clink" by Rachel Dwan. In this new collection of paintings, which she sees as illustrations of her creative process, Dwan explores abstract compositions with primarily black and white oil paint on canvas. She describes her process as walking into a glowing haze of possibility and responding to the pricks of sudden sharp intuition with action. Both haze and clarity have to exist within the making, and continue to exist in the resulting work. She embodies these opposites metaphorically with the terms "feather" and "clink". To feather is to fringe out and soften along an edge; to clink is to knock two hard objects against each other. The feather implies a soft drifting, a wandering path that can't be controlled, while clink summons up the extreme clarity of glass.

Her answer to the question "how do we make something new" is to live out a contradiction - a "clink" of recognition, and then a "feathering" out as the sensation loosens, unraveling into new threads of possibility. Each of these paintings has two aspects: crisp black lines, and the nuanced shimmer of the background. The misty and distant mesh of possibility that covers the canvas is made entirely from the ghosts of the original, composition-forging marks. After drawing a line, Dwan rolls over it with a paint roller, picking up the impression of the line and dropping it repeatedly, though with decreasing opacity, across the surface. This rhythm draws subtle linkages between the original marks and their duplicates. Through this dance of "clinking" crisp marks and the ghostly resonance around those lines, clarity and possibility start to merge into a continuous, mutually informing circle. The senses feather out in all directions, with moments of clarity tinkling through the delicate haze of the possible. Every action continues to echo, and may align, as it echoes out, in serendipitous ways. These works are witness to that.

Rachel Dwan (b. 1986) lives and works in San Francisco. She studied Architectural Design at Stanford, graduating in 2009. Dwan's paintings and drawings have been exhibited at Guerrero Gallery, Incline Gallery, and a.Muse in San Francisco, as well as Central Booking in New York.
