Annual Sound Summit Concert & Fundraiser Brings Legendary Musicians to Mount Tam

Sound Summit, the annual benefit concert for Mount Tamalpais State Park, returns to the 4,000 seat, open-air Mountain Theater in Marin this fall for a day of eclectic music high above San Francisco Bay.

Headlining the event this year is jazz legend and musical icon Herbie Hancock, with support from other stellar artists such as rock vocalist Grace Potter, the return of special guest Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, rising country star Nikki Lane, and Bay Area funk and soul ensemble Con Brio. House DJ Andy Cabic from Vetiver will also be spinning tunes between sets throughout the day and KNBR morning radio show hosts Murph & Mac (aka Brian Murphy and Paul McCaffrey) will return once more as the day’s dynamic masters of ceremonies.

As the event’s founder and architect Michael Nash had shared with SF Station, “Our mission is the conversation of natural resources, both physical and cultural. Towards that end, we try to create intersections between the environment and the arts to their mutual benefit. That’s what Sound Summit is in a nutshell. What’s unique about it is that it allows us to bring artistic resources to the very place we’re supporting.”

Last year, Sound Summit hosted performances by Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh & Bob Weir. In 2015, the event’s inaugural year, Sound Summit raised $40,000 for Mount Tamalpais State Park and allocated the funds to projects with tangible impact in fire prevention, water conservation, and visitor services. In 2016, that number jumped to $60,000 and was donated as a grant to the mountain. In 2017, a grant of $75,000 was delivered to the park, total $175,000 for entire the three-year period.

The single-day, outdoor music and arts festival is produced by Roots & Branches Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization. Tickets for this year’s Sound Summit go on sale Friday, July 27 at 10am, starting at $110 for adults and $55 for youth 12 and under, with children 2 and under are admitted free.
