June Gets All Jazzed Up with SFJAZZ Festival Shows & Summer Sessions Across Five Venues

Programming for the 36th annual San Francisco Jazz Festival Festival has been confirmed, highlighted by live shows from legend Ahmad Jamal, iconic New Orleans singer Irma Thomas, Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes, and electric bassist Marcus Miller. In addition, artists performing as part of the Summer Sessions have also been revealed, including performances by Gregory Porter singing the timeless songs of Nat “King” Cole accompanied by the Magik*Magik Orchestra.

What originally began back in 1983 as a two-day event called the Jazz in the City has since expanded over the past 36 years to a now the globally-renowned institution called the San Francisco Jazz Festival. This year’s festival will host 43 distinct shows over 13 days across five different venues around SF’s Hayes Valley neighborhood.

The 36th San Francisco Jazz Festival kicks off on Tuesday, June 5 with a free admission celebration at the outdoor Proxy space along Octavia Street between Hayes Street and Fell Street in Hayes Valley that runs from 5-10pm. Activities for this evening include live music from Beso Negro and Howard Wiley & Extra Nappy, plus a beer garden, videos, and food trucks.

Beyond the festival lineup, SFJAZZ also presents a series of 2018 Summer Sessions. This stretch of shows features a New Grass-American Roots themed week, an exclusive Philip Glass Fest, along with performances by Zoë Keating and Taj Mahal. There will be standalone events such as the Dustbowl Revival and the Hot Club of Cowtown, plus a Gypsy Swing event, two Cuban Piano Masters events, and many more performances.
