September 14-16, Friday & Saturday 7:30pm, Saturday & Sunday 2pm
The Firehouse Arts Center opens their 2018-2019 theater season with "Wonderland," a delightfully re-imagined tale of Alice in Wonderland, presented by Bay Area Children's Theatre in partnership with the City of Pleasanton Civic Arts Stage Company.
The story opens in present-day, in a small coastal town a few hours north of San Francisco. Imaginative "Allison," the story's protagonist, and her two siblings are settling into a new school year when their lives are turned upside down.
Through an unexpected series of events, Allison finds herself in the Wonderland of Lewis Carrol's stories, but things are very different from the stories her Grandmother read to her growing up. She goes on a wild journey to find out why she's there and how - or if! - she can go back. Along the way she meets several zany characters from the original Alice stories along with new, never-before-seen inhabitants of Wonderland.
The local actors range from 9 to 16 years of age, and the two casts are appropriately the Looking Glass Cast (28), and the Rabbit Hole Cast (25).
"Our rehearsal process this time has been unique," says returning Director Bob Shyrock (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Madagascar Jr., James and the Giant Peach Jr.). "We did not start with a script and we still don't have one. In the world of theatre, this way of working is referred to as Devising or Collaborative Creation. The actors and directors have been working together over the last few weeks (first rehearsal was July 30) to create all of the dramatic material that is usually created by the playwright: plot, character, relationship, setting, theme, etc. ...Working this way requires an expanded skillset, plus generosity, creativity, diligence and a lot of patience! My hope is that over the course of this process and production, the students will learn not just about acting and performance, but about creating, dramaturgy, storytelling and collaboration."
