Singer James Bohannon and guitarist Conor Cook went to middle school together in New York City; James went to high school with synth/keys/guitar player Nils Vanderlip where they formed their first band.In 2014, VHS recorded several tracks in their bedrooms which they posted informally on Soundcloud. Surprised and encouraged by the volume of listeners, VHS began performing a live set around NYC's lower east side rock clubs, quickly becoming a mainstay headliner at the Mercury Lounge. In December 2015, VHS independently released the VHS Collection EP. The EP's lead single "Lean" went to #8 on the Spotify Viral charts. In 2016, VHS released Stereo Hype, whose single “Waiting on the Summer” also charted on the viral charts and was streamed 15 million times in one year. 2016 saw the band perform at its first major festivals including Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. The band completed its first North American Headline tour in 2017, featuring sold out shows at LA's Troubadour and NYC's Music Hall of Williamsburg.VHS Collection songs have been featured in several TV shows including Shameless, Sunday Night Football, Netflix's Love, and others.VHS's songs have been streamed over 35 million times on Spotify. The band's 3 most recent singles, 'Sign' (2017), 'One' (2018), and 'Animal' (2018) have all earned over 1 million streams.
