Back in the early '90s, just about every underground band in these parts played funk-metal. That trend came to a screeching halt, but occasional funk-rock bands still sprout up. Locals Usurper Vong certainly use elements of funk and rock, but they sound nothing like that ridiculous '90s scene. They produce a lighter sound with heavier pop elements and they layer in some thick vocal harmonies. There's even a bit of a twang in there. Their goofy charm goes with their honest, vulnerable, unpretentious music.
