Reception: Thursday, August 30, 5-7pm; Gallery Hours: 1-5pm, Every Fri, Sat, Sun
Curiosity-driven artist and scientist, Elena Monte, has a passion for exploring the natural world. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry and divides her time between research in photosynthetic organisms and art making in Barcelona and the Bay Area. Here on a six month sabbatical, Elena is working on a science project at UC Berkeley. In the spring, whenever she wasn't in the lab, Elena studied printmaking at Kala Art Institute. And over several weeks, she developed a strong body of monotypes. Through a process of building color, layering materials, and responding intuitively to the composition and feel of the paper, each unique print contains its own rhythm of pattern and shape, marks and space. Many of these beautiful works on paper are currently up at Urbano Cellars, in Berkeley, in an exhibition curated by artist Kimberly Rowe.
Elena's pieces can be seen hanging in the Tasting Room Gallery, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1-5pm, through September 16th. A reception for the artist will take place on August 30th. Jim Tepperman and Peter Tracy from the band HopHead will provide live music. And light fare by Chef Cynthia Bloebaum will be offered throughout the evening celebration. Wine by the glass is available for purchase.
Founded in 2006, Urbano Cellars is known for its award-winning wines, handcrafted in small lots. It has an easy, community-friendly feel, hosting a variety of events, such as cooking workshops and movie nights; Wine Down Fridays once a month in the summer; and its annual December Ham and Latke party. In 2015, a new tasting room was added, making it the perfect place to hang artwork on the walls. At least six different edgy, contemporary art exhibitions, with work by local and international artists, are installed throughout the year.
