ArtSpan’s Artists Residencies at the Journal Building announces the participation of its 22 constituent artists in the third weekend of ArtSpan’s SF Open Studios, October 30-November 1, 2015 at the Journal Building, 1540 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94102. The Residencies will kick off the weekend with a festive, costume-optional Opening Party with a social media photo booth and community art wall on October 30 from 6-9 P.M. The building will be open to the public on Saturday, October 31st and Sunday, November 1st from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. This SF Open Studios weekend marks the first time that the Journal Building will open its doors to the public since the Residency program’s inception in mid-September.
ArtSpan conceived of the Artists Residencies at the Journal Building as an innovative pilot program to combat the mass exodus of visual artists from San Francisco. Parallel to one of ArtSpan’s core values of providing a conduit for community building through connection with art, the Artist Residencies start with the selected artist's shared interest in creating art as the initial connection to each other in order to grow community. The Residencies, which runs through March 2016, provides 22 artists from diverse backgrounds and working in a broad variety of media with below-market-rate temporary studio workspace along with programming and guidance intended to focus and nurture their artistic practices.
As San Francisco’s leading pan-city, apolitical visual arts non-profit, ArtSpan’s initial foray into space planning and management through the Artists Residencies at the Journal Building is the first of what is hoped are other opportunities to secure and create temporary and permanent creative work environments for current and future generations of San Francisco artists.
Over the weekend, the artists-in-residence will display artwork in a variety of disciplines, including photography, assemblage, painting, pen, ink, and other forms of drawing, as well as site-specific installation. Many artists will offer their work for sale.
Please join us in celebrating our SF debut!
