The David Bennett Cohen Trio is composed of David, from Country Joe and the Fish, on piano, Roy Blumenfeld, from the Blues Project, on drums and Steve Ashman, from the Zazu Pitts Memorial Orchestra, on bass.

We play a combination of Blues, Boogie-Woogie and New Orleans R and B, in an old fashioned piano trio.

Downbeat Magazine says: "...reveals a blues-and-boogie pianist of bountiful musical imagination capable of bringing freshness to Professor Longhair's gumbo of Blues, ragtime, jazz and Afro-Cuban dance music."

CMJ music report says: "Cohen radiates the 88's impeccably!"

"Mr. Cohen isn't the average hippie gone Wall Street, he's also a certifiably smokin' barrel house rumba boogie-woogie piano player in the James Booker/Professor Longhair/Dr. John vein."

David Bennett Cohen has been a professional musician for more than 30 years. Best known for his innovative keyboard playing as an original member of the '60's rock band, Country Joe and the Fish, he is an equally accomplished guitar player who has been involved in numerous music scenes throughout his varied career.

Roy Blumenfeld had a ringside seat from his drum kit on some of the most exciting musical events in New York City during the mid-'60s. Born in the Bronx in 1944, he reached his teens as the first wave of American rock & roll was being created. He took up the drums and found himself drawn to blues, R&B, and jazz. Blumenfeld linked up with bassist Andy Kulberg through work with Al Kooper on the latter's early solo recordings for the Elektra Records sampler What's Shakin'. In 1965, he joined guitarist Danny Kalb in the latter's new band, which, with the addition of Kooper to the lineup, became the Blues Project. Blumenfeld was one of the longest serving members of the renowned group, whose mixture of R&B, blues, jazz, folk, and rock & roll influences made them a major cult band of the '60s, and a huge influences on generations of other musicians. He was there past its end: with Kulberg, he formed Seatrain out of the ruins of the Blues Project in 1968. He played on folk singer Mark Spoelstra's self-titled album for Columbia Records in 1969, and also on the subsequent Blues Project reunions. Blumenfeld worked with Nick Gravenites in the '70s and Robert Hunter at various times in the '80s and '90s, but his most visible gig was with Kooper on the live shows that became Soul of a Man.

Bassist Steve Ashman is well known in Bay Area circles as the founder and mastermind of one of the Bay Area’s legendary bands, the Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra. Steve’s performance art piece recently had its debut at Grosse Pointe. It featured 1,127 bags of Cool Ranch Doritos, the Grosse Pointe High School Debate team, and a lawn tractor. His musical research has shed light on the phenomenon that causes people to mis-interpret lyrics (phrases like “the girl with Kaleidoscope eyes” somehow becomes “the girl with colitis goes by”). In addition, Steve has been busy working on his first symphony – roughly titled “Don’t Pick Up Those Sticks, Throw Away the Harmonica!” – a tribute to his son’s struggle with Brittany Spears. Capping off a busy, yet productive year, Steve has finally discovered that those long chains that somehow form “dem changes” are also known as “chord progressions” …
