Anna Maria Mendieta's Tango Del Cielo (Tango of Heaven), presents an immersive afternoon of music, dance, film and theatrical spectacle in a rare San Francisco Bay Area appearance. The ensemble of instrumentalists and dancers from the Bay Area and beyond, celebrates the cultural heritage of Latin America and Spain, with a program that traverses Argentine tango, Spanish flamenco and classical music, Brazilian Bossa nova, and Latin Jazz. The concert evolves as a multi-media presentation, with sets, stage props, lighting effects, glamorous costumes, film, and projections that evoke the Golden Age of Hollywood and the era of silent film, when tango was first popularized in the United States.
Harpist Anna Maria Mendieta, whose performances have been praised by The Mercury News as "charismatic," "exquisite," and "luminous," founded Tango Del Cielo 10 years ago to explore the rich cross-cultural tapestry from which tango first emerged in Buenos Aires, in the late 1800s. She innovates within the genre by adding harp to the classic tango instrumentation, replacing the bandoneon or guitar and adding bright flourishes, driving dance rhythms, and evocative melodies on her instrument.
Tango Del Cielo performs music by Astor Piazzolla and Spanish masters Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz and Joaquin Rodrigo, alongside original compositions and arrangements by contemporary composers such as Grammy winners Pablo Ziegler and Daniel Binelli. The special guest dancers are the Los Angeles duo Sandor & Parissa, who have performed and choreographed tango dances for ABC's Dancing with the Stars, for the Olympics and for the hit Broadway/London show, Forever Tango. Featured performers include violinist Matthew Szemela, cellist Joseph Hebert, percussionist Antonio Gomez and dancers are two-time National Tango Champion Marcelo Molina from Buenos Aires, and flamenco dancer Suzanne Mendieta, who was a featured dancer at the World EXPO in Seville, Spain.
