VIDEO ESSAY
Izidora Leber
6 sessions >> Tuesdays, July 11-August 15
6:30-9:30 pm, Studios 8 + DMS2, $275
No prerequisite. Students are asked to bring in a personal writing piece to use as a concept for their video as well as have access to a video camera or smartphone, etc for filming outside of class.
This course will focus on the history, construction, and various forms of the video essay within the genre of video art. Using a piece of text as a starting point, you will expand upon this idea for the completion of your own personal video essay. Your text will provide a solid foundation to work out the relationship between visual and written language—and between image and sound—which are both crucial to the art of video (essay) production. Deepening readings, lectures on the central markers within the history of video art, a potential field trip to the internet archive based in SF, and contemporary video essay artists including Chris Marker, Ed Atkins, and Hito Steyerl, will provide grounding and inspiration in the medium. In-class time will be focused on critique and viewing of in-progress work, as well as the basics (and individual needs) of editing in Premiere Pro. The class will culminate with a public screening of your video essay on the historic SFAI campus.
Bring a text that you want to embed into the video you will work out throughout this class - this is not limited to but can be a (non)fictional text, poem, letter, etc.

Izidora Leber is a Croatian-born artist living and working in Oakland / San Francisco. She is primarily a video maker that focusses on video installation and video essay. As a writer, research plays a vital role in her practice - be it through the interview, cultural theory and art history. A critical relationship between representation, cultural production as medium itself and the history thereof is central to her concerns of power, queerness, cultural identities and visual representation itself. Izidora Leber received her BFA at ZHdK in Zurich, Switzerland and her MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2017.
