"We aren't singing as much as listening to God's instructions with our souls," explains Asif Ali Khan of his music. And indeed, what he plays may have his own unique modern twist to it, but more importantly it has a spiritual history that dates back 700 years. Khan is the current lead figure in Qawwali, a devotional music of the Sufi faith-a mystical branch of Islam. The music is from India and Pakistan, and is known for the steady trance-like rhythm of the tebala drums (think congas, but higher-pitched), hand claps, and call and response choruses, which sound like meditation incarnate. Khan's voice is sublime, and creates a lively excitement to the traditional music. (Aaron Carnes)
