Following the screening, KQED's Mina Kim moderates a conversation with Burns and his team about making the film and telling the story of this uniquely American musical art form.
From its deep and tangled roots in ballads, blues and hymns performed in small settings, to its worldwide popularity, the film explores how country music evolved over the course of the 20th century, as it eventually emerged to become America’s music. Featuring the biographies of the fascinating trailblazers who created and shaped it — from the Carter Family, to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Johnny Cash, to Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and many more — as well as the times in which they lived, the film tells unforgettable stories of hardships and joys shared by musical legends and everyday people alike.
