New Works by Suzanne M. Long
May 1 - June 15, 2025
NY2CA Gallery, 617 First Street, Benicia, CA
Free Admission | Tues - Thurs 12 - 5
NY2CA Gallery is proud to present Sheep Show, a solo exhibition by ceramic sculptor Suzanne M. Long, on view from May 1 through June 15, 2025. This deeply reflective and quietly whimsical show explores one of humanity's oldest relationships: the bond between humans and sheep.
For more than 10,000 years, sheep have been part of our story-offering wool for warmth, milk and cheese for nourishment, and even lanolin to soften our skin. Their tallow lit our nights, their hides became our shoes, and their gut became the strings in violins, violas, lutes, and harps. They've fed us, clothed us, soothed us-and symbolized innocence, sacrifice, and purity across religions and mythologies.
But sheep are more than symbols. They are sentient, emotional, and highly social beings-capable of empathy, optimism, and recognizing emotion in the faces of others. "Sheep are like us in many ways," writes Long, "but kinder."
Long's sculptural works blend personal memory, emotional resonance, and cultural reflection. Her creative process is rooted in repetition and narrative-"like picking out the notes on a piano," she says. "I repeat a piece until it becomes a part of me." Her ceramics are often accompanied by short stories, titles, or poetic fragments that invite the viewer to look closer, feel deeper, and maybe remember something forgotten.
With a background in illustration and graphic design from Temple University's Tyler School of Art, Long transitioned to fine art after moving to the Bay Area in the early '90s. A sculptor since 1996, she lives and teaches in Vallejo, CA.
Sheep Show is a tribute to the overlooked and the ordinary. It's about memory, care, and the quiet ways we're connected-across time, species, and stories.
