"Self Portraits" by Alexandra Cicorschi: Opening Reception

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present "Self Portraits" by Alexandra Cicorschi. This new body of mixed media artwork manipulates abstract and geometric forms to obtain an organic gestural vocabulary. Treating wood grain as brush strokes, Alexandra interlocks directions, angles and natural textures in a perpetual search for line fluidity. Carefully chosen, limited color palettes compliment the natural tones of the reclaimed wood, while natural elements like tree knots, clusters of leaves, flowers, and rock textures provide inspiration.

Having grown up in Romania during the last years of its communist regime, Alexandra internalized at an early age how limited resources can fuel creative reuse. When in need, people reach out for help, forming communities and offering support; almost nothing gets discarded in this cycle. Some of Alexandra's earliest memories are of her family's repurposing, fixing and repairing household items. Replacing something that was broken was a luxury very few could afford, and an object's story didn't always end after its first life cycle had been exhausted.

The majority of the wood Alexandra uses in her work comes from local demolished houses and old furniture. She started working with salvaged materials after coming across discarded construction slabs with over 400 rings in their grain. She was struck by the idea that people regarded something this old and beautiful as trash- when she buys a slab of wood, she imagines another tree being cut.

The strips created by re-milling salvaged materials become Alexandra's brushstrokes. Small movements inside wood grains influence large movements in the composition. Open angles guide the fluidity of lines, telling a story of perpetual movement and transformation. Continuity is at the base of creation because everything evolves from something. Where we decide to start our story is just the act of deciding what segment to focus on. Every artwork Alexandra creates is a fragment of a bigger picture.

Alexandra Cicorschi was born and raised in Romania. She graduated from the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany in 2007, and focused on traditional etching and furniture making. She now lives in San Francisco and works and exhibits regularly throughout the area.

Join us on Friday, March 6th from 6-8pm for the opening reception for "Self Portraits." Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance. The exhibition runs through April 28th, 2020.
