RANA FARHAN
September 29, 2013

Presented by Diaspora Arts Connection
“Persian poetry gets the blues. An intoxicating and utterly fresh musical combination.”
Emily Esfahani Smith - Wall Street Journal

Sunday, Sep 29

7pm $30 adv, $35 door

A unique fusion of classical Persian poetry with contemporary jazz and blues.

Iranian artist Rana Farhan sings in a cool bluesy style that transcends time and erases all borders, wowing listeners worldwide.

In her Harlem studio, together with Guitarist Steven Toub, Rana Farhan produces songs that marry the lyrics of the 13th century mystic poet Rumi and other classics with American elements of Blues and Jazz. The result is a rich and delicious blend that leaves the imagination longing for more, especially for young musicians in Iran who see Rana as an icon.

Rana’s virtual popularlity in Iran is what led Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi to feature her in his award winning film, “No One Knows About Persian Cats.”. Ghobadi says Rana is an important figure in the Iranian music scene today. “Like a needle and thread, Rana stitches East and West together through her music."

On her website, Rana proclaims that jazz is peace. She wants to reach out to more music fans, enveloping them in the love and freedom she's found through her music.

Jazz is peace. And love. And hope. Let Rana show you what it sounds like.
