Presidio Dialogues - Climate-Friendly Parks

PRESIDIO DIALOGUES – Thursday Evenings at 6 pm
Notable authors, artists, and conversation starters explore themes from ancient history to current events through interactive dialogues, stimulating talks, panels, performances, and films.
National parks across America are learning to adapt to the challenges brought about by climate change, like melting glaciers and rising tides. However, it is easier and more cost effective to prevent these changes from occurring in the first place. Come share your ideas and learn from the Presidio’s sustainability experts how our local national park sites are implementing green strategies that save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and seek to keep carbon in the soil. Our national parks have a unique opportunity to share lessons-learned and knowledge gained with millions of visitors every year, a great reason to model best practices as we become “Climate-Friendly Parks.”
Laura Castellini is the Sustainability Coordinator at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), where she has worked extensively on renewable energy, recycling, and energy and water conservation projects since 2005. Under Laura’s leadership, the GGNRA has made significant progress in greening their fleet, reducing waste and educating employees. Laura was instrumental in developing Golden Gate's Climate Change Action Plan, and is also active with the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation. Laura is a Bay Area native with a Master's in Marine Biology from San Francisco State University.
Dale Dualan is the Sustainability Coordinator and Engineering Technician for Point Reyes National Seashore, where he coordinates sustainability planning and compliance, implements the park’s carbon reduction strategy, and oversees compost operations. Dale is responsible for sustainability education and outreach and is the Point Reyes Safety, Health, and Wellness contact. He started working for Point Reyes National as a Student Conservation Association, Americorps Intern in 2010 and was then hired by the Seashore in 2012. Dale has a Bachelor’s of Science in Conservation and Resource Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
Abby Morris is the Environmental Protection Specialist for the Presidio Trust. She joined the Trust in 2008. She works with the Presidio waste reduction program and manages the Presidio compost facility. Abby has led the Presidio Trust’s efforts for data collection and reporting related to carbon emissions, waste diversion, and other environmental indicators. During this period, she established a working baseline for the Presidio Trust’s carbon footprint. Her efforts in waste diversion reporting have resulted in the Presidio Trust being chosen as the Environmental Protection Agency’s Wastewise Federal Partner of the Year Award. Abby has Bachelor’s in Biology from Oberlin College.
