Presidio Book Club is an inclusive gathering that anyone can take part in, whether or not they’ve read the book. Led by Presidio Trust historian, Dr. Barbara Berglund Sokolov. Presented in partnership with the California Historical Society’s current exhibitions, Alexander Hamilton: Treasures from the New York Historical Society and Meanwhile out West: Colonizing California 1769-1821. Deepen your understanding of California colonial encounters by listening to the voices of Indigenous leaders, artisans, painters, and translators who labored in the Spanish missions. Investigate the politics of Indigenous citizenship in independent Mexico through the Chumash War of 1824, native emancipation after 1826, and the pursuit of Indigenous rights and land through 1848.
