Born in Mexico of Communist ex-patriot Americans, I lived back and forth between two very different cultures-the nuance, physicality and intuition of the Latin culture right next door to the power and prescience of the United States. On top of that, my father was one of the most important black revolutionary poets of the 50's and 60's; it made me who I am."
