CROCODILES
Tarnishing sunny melodies with a scuzzy recording style and lots and lots of feedback, Crocodiles' Charles Rowell and Brandon Welchez met during their formative teenage years in San Diego. Playing together in various incarnations since then, including in the Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, which featured Welchez on vocals and Rowell on guitar, the duo re-formed in a lo-fi capacity under the name Crocodilesin April of 2008. After self-releasing a distortion-driven 7", their single Neon Jesus was championed by No Age on a Stereogum best-of-2008 poll. As Crocodiles' debut full-length was recorded over that winter, blog readers started taking notice, and Summer of Hate was released by Fat Possum in late April of 2009. That winter, Crocodiles put out a Christmas-themed split 7" with Dum Dum Girls and prepped their follow-up, Sleep Forever, for the summer of 2010. After adjusting their lineup to include bassist Marco Gonzalez, keyboardist Robin Eisenberg, and drummer Anna Schulte, Rowell, Welchez, and the group traveled from their hometown of San Diego to record their third full-length in Berlin. That album, Endless Flowers, was released in the spring of 2012 on Souterrain Transmissions in the U.K. and French Kiss in the U.S.

AJ DAVILA
Best-known as the bassist and lead singer with Puerto Rican garage rockers Davila 666, AJ Davila stepped out as a solo artist in 2014 with his debut album, the tough, rollicking, and stylistically broad Terror Amor. Following extensive international touring in support of Davila 666's 2011 album Tan Bajo, the group went on hiatus, and in October 2012 Davila began work on his solo project. Recording most of the material in his home studio (where he also cut many of Davila 666's releases), Terror Amor found him expanding his boundaries from straightforward garage punk into tunes inspired by classic R&B, girl group sounds, contemporary pop, and vintage glam rock. Featuring collaborations with Cole Alexander of the Black Lips, Sergio Rotman of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Alex Anwandter of Teleradio Donoso, Fofé Abreu of Circo, and Davila 666 bandmate Johnny Otis Davila, Terror Amor was released in February 2014 through Nacional Records. A second album, Beibi, followed later the same year on Burger Records.

HOT FLASH HEAT WAVE

Hot Flash Heat Wave is San Francisco’s new sound. They create melodically upbeat, hook-filled garage rock, referencing a range of influences from Girls and the Beach Boys, to Santo & Johnny and Weezer. Their style is partially a tongue and cheek nod to the dreamy, lo-fi vibes of the “chill-wave” movement, as contrasted by the more sunny, sweltering sound of their own jams (“heat-wave”).

Here comes the sunrise of a new musical era in San Francisco. Comprised of 4 high school best friends living, writing, and recording under the same roof, Hot Flash is set to release their debut record “Neapolitan” later this year.
