Maestro Michael DiGiacinto and Winchester Orchestra present two magnificent works, Wolfgang A. Mozart's Requiem in D Minor, and Johannes Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Joining the orchestra in the Mozart will be the West Valley College Concert Chorale, Lou De La Rosa, Director, with soloists Heather Green, Katja Heuzeroth, Woojeong Lee, and Kiril Havezov.
In July 1791, Mozart, alarmed by his declining health, received an anonymous commission for the Requiem (Later it was revealed to be notorious music plagiarizer, Count F. von Walsegg.) Terrified that the Requiem was a foreshadowing of his demise, he began hurriedly composing. Sadly, he could not outrace his fate and in December 1791, his worst fear came to be-death without completion. His pupil F. Sussmayr finished it with some orchestration by J. Eybler. To ensure collecting the fee for the Requiem, Mozart's wife schemed to forestall knowledge of other composers' involvement-unleashing eons of mystery. Upon hearing the Requiem, none other than Beethoven declared "If Mozart did not write the music, then the man who wrote it was a Mozart."
Also on the program Brahm's Variations on a Theme of Haydn. Of all the very exciting moments in each movement "The finale is a magnificent theme and variations on a ground bass...derived from the principal theme...is a moment of such transcendence..."-Wikipedia
