Mozart and Beethoven 'Grace and Drama' Afternoon Lecture Recital

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven left the world a trove of artistic treasures. Though separated by a short window of time, they lived in different political, cultural and musical atmospheres. That is the secret to uncovering the nuances in their different styles.
Pianist Ian Scarfe will discuss their lives in Vienna in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and present an offering of their piano music, including sonatas and fantasias. Scarfe's entertaining analysis gives the audience a chance to experience and understand the finer details of the music.
Scarfe enjoys a busy career as a piano soloist, collaborative pianist and chamber musician. An enthusiastic performer, he averages over one hundred performances each year, which take him across the US, Canada and Europe.
He is the founder and director of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, which presents annual retreats and concert tours for musicians from around the world. He is a founding member of the Vinifera Trio, an ensemble based in California's wine country, and the Zurich Mozart Trio based in Zurich, Switzerland. Scarfe is also a founding member of the group Nonsemble 6, renowned for its fully staged performances of Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire.
Ian frequently lectures on music, giving talks on music appreciation and history at universities, adult education programs and retirement communities. His solo appearances with orchestras prominently feature the music of Beethoven. He is currently a music associate at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he earned a master's degree in 2008 and an artist's certificate in 2010. He earned a bachelor's of music degree in 2005 from Willamette University.
