Masterpiece Moment, sponsored by Bank of America, at SFMOMA

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Through Bank of America's educational Masterpiece Moment series, curated art pieces from leading museums across the U.S., including SFMOMA, are on YouTube.

Viewers will learn about Ethiopian-born and Michigan-raised artist Julie Mehretu's "Howl," a reference to American poet Allen Ginsburg's poem and the progressive 1950's San Francisco culture. In the YouTube video, SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra tells us more about this museum-commissioned historical exploration. Each layer of Mehretu's abstract work--made up of two separate 27 x 32 feet canvases--references prehistoric to contemporary history.

The piece, which lives on both sides of SFMOMA's main staircase in the Haas, Jr. Atrium, also celebrates the promise of California while acknowledging the social and economic difficulties of Western expansion.

Mehretu was included in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020, and she has had solo shows at the Guggenheim Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the Whitney.
