Maestro David Ramadanoff kicks off MSCO's 2013-2014 season with Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, Mozart's Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C Major, Soloist Laura Griffiths, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68.
Ravel
Le Tombeau de Couperin
Pamela Martin Conducting
Maurice Ravel composed Le Tombeau de Couperin between 1914 and 1917 as a suite for solo piano. Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of a friend of Ravel who had died fighting in World War I. Later, in 1919, Ravel arranged the suite for orchestra, and it is that version which we present in our concert this season.
Mozart
Concerto for Oboe Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C Major, K. 314
Soloist Laura Griffiths
Beethoven
Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, also known as the Pastoral Symphony, was completed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1808. One of Beethoven's few works containing explicitly programmatic content, the symphony was first performed in the Theater an der Wien on 22 December, 1808 in a four hour concert.
