Before the White Stripes popularized the whole rock & roll two-piece thing, there was M.O.T.O (Masters Of The Obvious), who in the '90s gained a modest following for their quirky, dark garage-punk tune "Rot Rot Rot." M.O.T.O. even had a male guitarist/singer and a female drummer. Thing is, the two-piece iteration is only one of the many phases the band has gone through since their inception in 1981. They've also been a trio and a four-piece, before returning to just a duo, as they've walked around the edges of popular rock music with their offbeat, often quite vulgar, sound. Lead singer and guitarist Paul Caporino, the only constant in the group, is a prolific pop songwriter. He's just way too weird for most audiences. (Aaron Carnes)
