This poetic meditation on Jean Epstein focuses on the time he spent in Brittany. Epstein found great inspiration from the sea, and created some of his most beautiful lyrical films while living near it. Interviews with his sister Marie Epstein and filmmaker Jean Rouch, as well as rare archival footage and photographs, reveal Epstein’s cinematic vision, as do juxtapositions of images from his original films and their present-day equivalents. And for Senses of Cinema, “just as beautiful as the extracts from Epstein’s films were the extracts from his writings—nobody has written on the cinema with more emotive force.”
