Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band (featuring Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio)

Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band is a group comprised of Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Ryan Sawyer (Lone Wolf and Cub), Josh Werner (Lee “Scratch” Perry, CocoRosie), and Alex Holden (Big Numbers). Their self titled EP is a five song odyssey that recalls CAN, Talk Talk, This Heat, Ali Farka Touré, and occasionally the stray thoughts of a half-mad motorist coasting down a desert road in the dead of night, wondering if the visions, the flames, the whole catastrophe had been a sudden initiation to an elevated mystical path or just a cruel and beautiful hoax. SO AWESOME. The live shows are a riot. By the way, if you haven't heard of the above-mentioned bands, you can find them on the people's Internet. They're quite good. Very solid. Nice teeth. If you haven't heard of Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band ("Higgy Baby" to friends and foes alike) the same applies. They're quite good, they're on the people's Internet, and EXTREMELY solid, a band of unconscionable mass. Teeth could use some help, though, please donate. The EP was recorded at Bill Laswell’s Orange Sound Music Studio by James Dellatacoma and Laswell was kind enough to personally mix Mad Lifeline. Daniel Schlett at Strange Weather in Brooklyn mixed the other four tracks. You should really look into that. Mastered by Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound and released as a 12” EP on the band’s very own ZNA Records.

Her recordings and live performances range from solo songing to noise improvisations. TJO has composed and performed music and sound for films, theater and dance performances, and written large and small ensemble experimental architectures.

As a solo artist, TJO has released 7 full length albums internationally. She founded the Ecstatic Tambourine Orchestra and has played with the likes of Papa M, Mount Eerie, Ida, Mirah, Michael Hurley, Lori Goldston, Jackie-O Motherfucker, and the King Cobra. In the last century TJO was a member of art-punk band Rodan, the chamber music jam band The Sonora Pine and many others. She has made experimental scores to films by Makino Takashi, Vanessa Renwick , Linas Phillips and Theo Angell. Collaborating with Rachel Carns and Anna Joy Springer, she produced the music for Springer's fabulist novel, the Vicious Red Relic, Love (jaded Ibis Press). She scored the experimental theater piece, at the Vanishin Point, by Naomi Iizuka for the Humana Festival of New American Plays. In addition to art galleries, DIY spaces and rock clubs around the US, Japan and Europe, TJO has performed at All Tomorrow's Parties (invited by the Dirty Three), Primavera Sound, REDCAT, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Andy Warhol Museum, High Desert Test Sites, and the TBA festival in Portland, Or. In 2011 she released an album of improvisational collage with Japanese vocalist, Nikaido Kazumi.
