Bobbi Jene Smith’s newest choreographic project is a duet comprising seven distinct scenes and featuring multimedia projection. Deeply stirring, this dance performance poetically investigates the relationships we make and leave behind and conjures the effects of those emotional connections in one’s life and body. Evoking the dual meanings of the word “harrow” – both a noun designating an instrument used to turn over and smooth soil and a verb meaning to cause distress – Smith’s work deftly figures beauty and pitfalls of nostalgia and romance. Harrowing extends and repositions Smith’s myriad previous and ongoing projects, most especially Arrowed, a dynamic work that investigates the emotional undercurrents characterizing one’s inner world. Arrowed will be performed at least once a year for the whole of Smith’s life.
