From Kanye to McCartney, Big Concerts Arrive in SF in August

August is a huge month for live music in San Francisco and Northern California with some of the biggest summer tours and festival touching down at local venues.

We’ve selected a few highlights below. Visit SF Station’s events calendar for complete listings.

Jay Z & Beyonce at AT&T Park
Music’s biggest power couple arrive in San Francisco for two night with the On The Run tour. Arguably the hottest ticket this summer, the couple reportedly gross $5.2 million per show. Don’t expect Jay’s rhymes about his riches to slow down anytime soon.

Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park
Much to the chagrin of his legions of haters, newlywed Kanye West (he proposed to Kim Kardashian at AT&T Park) returns to San Francisco to headline the first night of Outside Lands this year. Tommy Petty, The Killers, Macklemore and Tiesto headline on Saturday and Sunday, but there’s plenty more to see (and eat) earlier in day. Tickets are sold out, but they are not hard to find online.

Santa Cruz Mountain Sol in Felton
A great option for weekend warriors looking for adventure beyond San Francisco—or those who couldn’t score a ticket to Outside Lands—the Santa Cruz Mountain Sol festival brings a quaint, jammy party to the Santa Cruz Mountains with Railroad Earth, Animal Liberation Orchestra, Ani DiFranco, New Monsoon and many more.

Paul McCartney a Candlestick Park
The end is near for San Francisco’s historic stadium after the 49ers skipped town for a new home in Santa Clara, but there is still time for one last party. After his performance at Outside Lands last year, Mayor Ed Lee helped coax the former Beatle into playing the last concert at Candlestick. It’s appropriate, considering the Beatles’ last performance was at the stadium in 1966.

Built to Spill at Slim’s
Pioneers of guitar-driven indie rock, Doug Martsch and company return for a three-night stand at Slim’s. There should be some surprises in store. The band’s last visit to San Francisco include covers of Captain Beefheart and Metallica’s “Orion.”

20th Street Block Party between Bryant and Harrison
Noise Pop’s free 20th Street Block Party returns for its second year with Rogue Wave, Cayucas and Ray Barbee and Tommy Guerrero (at one time two of the biggest names in skateboarding) jamming with SoCal jazz duo Mattson 2. The festival also features some of the neighborhood’s many delicious eateries, including Flour + Water, Trick Dog and Central Kitchen. The action continues with an after party at Public Works with Jacques Greene.

First City Festival in Monterey
Perfect for a short weekend trip away from San Francisco, First City Festival returns to the seaside village of Monterey for it’s second year with Beck, the National, the Naked and the Famous and Phantogram headlining two days of music.

Jack White at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
Rock ‘n’ Roll renaissance man Jack White added to his already lengthy catalog earlier this year with his second solo album, Lazaretto. The Third Man Records label head showcases it with a proper, large-scale rock show at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

Nine Inch Nails & Soundgarden at Shoreline
It’s 90s throwback night as two of the biggest names of that era reunite at Shoreline to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of milestone albums, NIN’s The Downward Spiral and Soundgarden’s Superunknown. Feeling old yet? The two band’s first attempt to tour together was back in 1994.
