Grace Winter Forum Online with Filmmaker Ken Burns: The Sweet Spot of History

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Ken Burns is one of the most influential documentary filmmakers of all time, and on Presidents' Day, he will be in conversation with Dean Malcolm Clemens Young to explore history and healing.
Each year Grace Cathedral chooses a theme for reflection, and in 2021 our theme is healing. Dean Young and Burns will discuss how presenting history through the lens of film can help us heal, connecting us to both our past and the present moment.
David Zurawik of The Baltimore Sun said, "... Burns [has] not only turned millions of persons onto history with his films, he showed us a new way of looking at our collective past and ourselves." And Wynton Marsalis has called Burns "a master of timing, and of knowing the sweet spot of a story, of how to ask questions to get to the basic human feeling and to draw out the true spirit of a given subject."
Join us on Presidents' Day to hear from a master storyteller how history can heal.
Space is limited. The Forum will also be broadcast on Facebook and on our website, and posted on our Youtube channel for viewing following the livestream.

Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made, including The Civil War; Baseball; Jazz; The War; The National Parks: America's Best Idea; The Roosevelts: An Intimate History; Jackie Robinson; The Vietnam War and Country Music. Future film projects include Hemingway, Muhammad Ali, The Holocaust and the United States, Benjamin Franklin, The American Buffalo, Leonardo da Vinci, The American Revolution, LBJ & the Great Society and Emancipation to Exodus, among others. Burns's films have been honored with dozens of major awards, including sixteen Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards and two Oscar nominations; and in 2008, at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards, he was honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
About the Host
The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young is the dean of Grace Cathedral. He is the author of The Spiritual Journal of Henry David Thoreau and The Invisible Hand in Wilderness: Economics, Ecology, and God, and is a regular contributor on religion to the Huffington Post and San Francisco Examiner.
About The Forum
The Forum is a series of stimulating conversations about faith and ethics in relation to the important issues of our day. We invite inspiring and illustrious people to sit down for a real conversation with the Forum's host, Malcolm Clemens Young, the dean of Grace Cathedral, and with you. Our guests range from artists, inventors and philosophers to pop culturists and elected officials, but the point of The Forum is singular: civil, sophisticated discourse that engages minds and hearts to think in new ways about the world.
