FRIDAY FILM @ Goethe EVERY 3rd FRIDAY OF THE MONTH
Director: Jochen Hick, 2013
Unlike the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic had already de-crimininalized homosexuality by 1968. However, the GDR did not exactly welcome its LGBT citizens with open arms. Their sexuality was still taboo and extruded from public life. The film portrays moving biographies of private and political developments and presents people who were trying to change the system and hoped for an open society in which they could embrace their sexual identities. Jochen Hick uses archival footage and excerpts from GDR newsreels to illustrate the historical dimension of the biographies and, thus, underlines the exciting individual stories from a minority's everyday life in the GDR.
