This week: Musical Culture Gets Funky
FABRICATING TOM ZE
(2007 89 minutes Decios Matos, Jr.)
Filmed during a concert tour, this lively portrait charts the freewheeling musical world of Tom Zé, for whom a guitar and a vacuum cleaner have the same melodic potential. David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, and others credit Zé with revitalizing Tropicalia; whether you agree or no, Zé's samba mash-up of "Smoke on the Water" and "Hey Jude" will turn your head around. With musical legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.

BRASS UNBOUND
(1993 106 minutes Johan van der Keuken)
When the colonial powers finally retreated from Asia and Africa, they left behind their military band instruments. This astonishing and amusing film shows how four very different post-colonial societies (in Nepal, Suriname, Indonesia, and Ghana) reshaped these imperialistic instruments to herald their own musical cultures. Colonel Bogey never sounded so funky.
