The fiddle has been a ubiquitous instrument in the music of many immigrant groups on the North American continent. Those that didn't bring it with them often adopted it from neighboring groups. This program will explore the music and some of the folklore associated with that most 'American' of instruments, the fiddle.
Attendees will hear examples of square dance music from Appalachia, Ozark fiddling, Pennsylvania old time fiddling, Scottish fiddling from Nova Scotia, New England Contra dance music, Irish music as played in the urban centers of America, Klezmer fiddling and more.
Kevin Carr has played fiddle for more than forty years, following the trail of traditional fiddle music across the US and to Ireland, Canada, Spain and Mexico. He loves to talk about the lore of the fiddle and was the recipient of an NEA grant to study Irish fiddling. As a member of the contradance band, The Hillbillies from Mars, he has played at hundreds of dances and dozens of dance camps across the country. Over the last three decades he has taught at many fiddle festivals in the US and abroad and has a deep grasp of a number of fiddle traditions.
