SEE EVENT DETAILS
Earl Scruggs 100th Birthday (+3) All-Star Bluegrass Celebration
With Bill Evans, Jim Nunally, Chad Manning, Mike Witcher, Tom Bekeny & Steve Pottier
With special guests Kathy Kallick, Evie Ladin and more TBA

Earl Eugene Scruggs, the most influential and imitated five-string banjo player in the world, was born on a forty-acre cotton farm in the little Flint Hill community of Cleveland County on January 6, 1924. In celebration of Scruggs' 100 th birthday, Steve Martin Banjo Prize recipient Bill Evans has assembled an All-Star cast of northern California bluegrass greats to celebrate the music and career of this remarkable musician in this one-time-only Freight performance.

Joining Bill will be Jim Nunally on guitar and lead vocals (Nell & Jim Band; David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, John Reischman & The Jaybirds); Chad Manning, fiddle (David Grisman Quintet, Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands); Mike Witcher, dobro (Dolly Parton, Dwight Yoakam, Watkins Family hour, Peter Rowan); Tom Bekeny, mandolin (Kathy Kallick Band, High Country) and Steve Pottier. Special guests include Kathy Kallick and Evie Ladin, with additional guests to be announced.

You'll hear selections from the earliest years of Earl's career as a member of the original bluegrass band led by Bill Monroe to many favorites from Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys and beyond to Earl's participation in the Will The Circle Be Unbroken recordings and the country-bluegrass-rock fusion he developed with his sons in the Earl Scruggs Revue.

Earl's banjo was the key ingredient necessary to create bluegrass music in 1945. Since that time, Earl became one of the most influential folk musicians in the entire world, as his technique has been adopted by literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of aspiring banjo players. Band leader Bill Evans has spent a lifetime studying Earl's playing and this concert will provide ample sonic evidence of Earl's greatness with an unforgettable banjo finale featuring many of the Bay Area's finest banjo players.
