The Dum Dum Girls know how to write catchy indie pop songs with dreamy, melancholy lyrics. Their two EPs and first album are chock full of tongue-in-cheek bubblegum melodies—sort of modernized '60s girl group, with a bit of '70s glam-punk for good measure). Things got a little heavier on their second album, Only in Dreams. Lead singer Dee Dee Penny's mother lost her battle with cancer, and Penny became more lonely and alienated as she and her husband maintained busy, separate tour schedules. Only in Dreams became cathartic for her, exploring those themes in depth. But is it still catchy indie pop? Of course. The production is a little more professional and the lyrics are more personal.
