DSF Presents: Sunday Girls by Valerie Santillo

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us August 1st for "Sunday Girls" new works from Valerie Santillo.

Inspired by vintage fashion, dreamy florals and the naive innocence of youth, Valerie Santillo’s illustrations are uncompromisingly graceful with a bit of a dark side. A lingerie designer and freelance illustrator by trade, Santillo’s work is largely influenced by editorial fashion and the backstage lives of the models themselves. Delicate peaches and untarnished golds are juxtaposed with vampy cat eyes and cigarette butts hidden throughout - almost suggestive of modern day Gibson girls.

Working with pencil, ink, and watercolor, Santillo’s washed out palettes and bold structures are coy, seductive, and achingly demure. The imagery is lavash and fanciful with just a hint of dirt - like a bruised knee under a silk gown.

Sunday Girls is a collection inspired by part time bad girls - girls who make it through their 9 - 5 during the week so that they can line their eyes and redden their lips for the weekend. Unapologetically feminine, but ferocious, Santillo’s collection is an homage to the kind of ladies who have switchblades hidden in the handles of their teasing combs. As Debbie Harry sings, “Live in dreams, Sunday girl.”
