This Valentines day, San Francisco will break with the tradition of romantic candlelit dinners by mobilizing hundreds of boomboxes in the city streets with the help of Vancouver-based project appropriately dubbed the “Decentralized Dance Party (DDP).” The city is no stranger to these revolutionary parties, which synchronize the boomboxes using an FM radio transmitter and guide grooving participants with a trident covered in LED lights through the best public party areas SF has to offer. But this time, its different.
The transmission won’t be coming from within the city, but rather 950 miles north and across the Canadian border in Vancouver, BC from the power glove of Decentralized Dance Party founder Gary Lachance. It will be the first ever simultaneous DDP to occur in two cities (let alone two countries) and it's destined to be legendary. While many boomboxes will be supplied at the starting point, it is highly encouraged that you find and decorate your own to maximize party potential.
The DDPs have been going on for years in cities across North America and Europe, and is entirely funded by donations. Grassroots efforts to spread the unconditional love for DDPs have taken a foothold in San Francisco, and local party aficionados will be releasing the starting point information at a later date.
