Clyde Sutliff, a versatile musician and survivor, made his mark in San Francisco's '90s acid-jazz scene with Dogslyde and as a founding member of Papa's Culture, although personal tragedies marred his path. Losing his mother and sister in tragic accidents challenged his professional success.
As he developed CV1, a reggae/dub-jazz group known for blending traditional Studio One-era rhythms to craft their unique "dub jazz" sound, the group gained recognition, opening for legends like Lee Scratch Perry and Michael Rose. Just as breakthrough success beckoned with an album produced by Michael Urbano of Smash Mouth, Clyde faced a life-altering massive stroke that left him comatose. Subsequent kidney failure necessitated years of dialysis, leading to the loss of vision in his right eye due to infection. Amidst these challenges, he persevered as a musician in the ever-changing Bay Area.
Yet, Clyde harbors no regrets or self-pity; he regards his life as blessed and remains devoted to his passion for music. A decade later, a kidney transplant, generously donated by his longtime girlfriend, enabled his physical and spiritual resurgence. Clyde is now poised to share his dub-jazz vision with a broader audience through CV Dub X. The ensemble includes E. Blake Davis on guitar, saxophonist Ben Ball, drummer Eddie Sassin from Undercover Ska, and DJ Dadio weaving intricate loops and effects into their sonic tapestry. Clyde's journey stands as a testament to resilience, unwavering musical dedication, and the triumph of the human spirit.
