Curious Planet at the Art Walk and at Sunday Sound Series!
One year ago at Proxy in Hayes Valley, deep in the pandemic, a man approached local jazz ensemble Curious Planet as they were playing their last set of the night. He asked the drummer, "Can I sing with you?" The drummer replied, "It's the end of the night, but come back next week."
The next week, Dorian Brockington, stage name "Dot Com", returned. He took the mic, and through a stutter he let the audience know his mother had just died and he was singing to honor her. His ensuing performance, raw and impassioned, left the audience dumbfounded and screaming for more. Since then, Dot Com became a crowd favorite, performing with Curious Planet at venues like Club Royale, Gestalt, and Club Deluxe. His explosive energy, heartfelt singing, and energetic dancing have been a hit with audiences. Between songs he offers personal stories about recovering from addiction, mourning his mother, living with a speech impediment, and the challenges he's faced as a Black man in America.
"Curious Planet gave me the mic," said Dot Com, a Bronx-born artist based in the Tenderloin. "I wanted to die the day I lost my mom. But instead, I showed up for Curious Planet, myself, and my tribe. The audience can see that I'm a pot that's boiling over and I turn it down so I can simmer just so I can cope with the beauty of it."
To commemorate the 1-year anniversary of their meeting, they will play at the Sunday Sound Series presented by Hayes Valley Art Works (HVAW) and Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association (HVNA). "Curious Planet and Dot Com brought music back during the depths of the pandemic, and got the neighborhood through a somber isolated time, with joy and music," said Barbara Early, HVNA's Arts & Entertainment Chair and Director of HVAW.
Curious Planet will also play at Hayes Valley Art Walk Sat 5/28 2-5 pm in the sculpture garden at Octavia and Page.
