In the orbit of such a beloved masterpiece as Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds existed lesser-known gems that warrant greater attention. The Clarinet Quintet of Anton Reicha, a Czech forebear to Dvořák and an intimate of Beethoven’s from their teenage years, demonstrates a keen melodic imagination worthy of his most prominent contemporaries. Not even Beethoven’s imposing shadow could blot out the brilliance of his rival Johann Nepomuk Hummel, whose colorful Septet for Winds, Strings, and Piano closes the program.
